Poeta, ensayista y conferencista estadounidense. Emerson se graduó en la Universidad de Harvard, y en 1829 fue ordenado pastor de la Iglesia Unitaria. Sus cuestionamientos acerca de la doctrina tradicional lo llevaron a renunciar a la clerecía tres años después. Formuló su filosofía en la obra Naturaleza (1836), libro que contribuyó a dar inicio al trascendentalismo en Nueva Inglaterra, movimiento del que pronto pasó a ser su exponente más destacado. En 1834 se trasladó a Concord, Mass., ciudad de su amigo Henry David Thoreau. Sus conferencias sobre el papel que le corresponde al erudito y acerca del debilitamiento de la tradición cristiana causaron gran controversia. En 1840, junto con Margaret Fuller, colaboró en el lanzamiento del diario The Dial, que canalizaba las ideas trascendentalistas. Se hizo internacionalmente conocido por su obra Ensayos (1841, 1844), que incluye Autoconfianza; y Hombres representativos (1850), un conjunto de biografías de personajes históricos. The Conduct of Life [La conducta de la vida] (1860), su trabajo de mayor madurez, revela un humanismo acendrado y una cabal conciencia de las limitaciones humanas.
